About the maker

Ronan is a sculptor from Achill Island off the west coast of Ireland. He draws much of hisinspiration from his windswept island home - the flora, the fauna, and the rugged coastline.

Ronan has a unique process for creation. The aim isn’t to convey a concept direclty. The chalk scratchings he makes on his bench creates the gem of an idea for a piece. This then leads to steel being welded together, then, using a grinder, a form is ‘carved’ from the mass of steel. This is an arduous process, but it produces beautifully rugged results, which have their own organically formed intrinsic meaning for those who choose to see it.

About the piece

As the legend goes, Queen Méabh became engulfed in a fit of jealous rage at her husband's most prized possession, an enormous white-horned bull.

Upon hearing there was an equally huge and fierce bull in Ulster, Méabh marched her army to the northern tip of Ireland and captured it.

On returning, Méabh placed her bull in a field next to the white-horned bull. Thinking its territory was being threatened, the white-horned bull immediately charged. For days, the bulls did battle across the entire island of Ireland. Finally, Méabh's bull was victorious, proving it to be the mightiest in the land.
